If you work in an office day-in and day-out, then you’re probably aware of all the downfalls. Spending long hours sitting at a desk can cause weight gain, lead to back and hip problems and has even been rumored to lead to a decrease in gluteal muscle. These were problems that TreadDesk creator Jerry Carr had to deal with several years ago. He decided instead of pushing through and getting used to the negative side effects of a desk job, he would create a way to stay focused while also staying fit. Enter in the TreadDesk.
If you’re thinking to yourself that there’s no way the TreadDesk can be what you think it is, well you’re wrong. The TreadDesk is in fact a simple combination of a traditional treadmill with a desk attached. This special desk allows users to still do work on a laptop and even take calls, all while walking on a treadmill. For those who hate to sit all day or who struggle to find time for a workout during the week, the TreadDesk could be just the solution you’re looking for. According to the TreadDesk website, some of the benefits of walking at your work station are:
- Great source of exercise.
- Supports weight loss and maintains weight loss.
- Reduces heart disease and stroke risks.
- Improves the body’s ability to utilize insulin.
- Eases the pain and stiffness of arthritis.
- Reduces the risk of developing some cancers.
- Improves sleep.
- Helps build stamina and flexibility.
- Reduces anxiety.
- Helps to fight depression.
- Increases blood flow.

The site goes on to state that replacing time spent at a traditional work station with a 1 mph walk on the TreadDesk, actually increases a person’s calorie burn by 100 calories per hour. Of course even with all of these positive effects that TreadDesk could have on your health, there are certain other issues to keep in mind. Many office workers are forced to wear suits and dresses and may find that type of clothing uncomfortable to walk in 8+ hours a day. For ladies who love their high heels, you would certainly need to switch out your shoes before attempting an all-day hike on this machine, and of course some people have reported issues with dizziness and exhaustion while trying to work long hours on the TreadDesk.
With all of that said, if you’re looking for a way to add a workout to your work-week but are unsure how to fit it in, the TreadDesk may be the answer you’ve been looking for. We of course recommend speaking with your doctor first to ensure that your body is up for this type of all day activity. Once you have the clearance, why not give TreadDesk a try. Even if you opt to only use it at home, it’s a great way to fit in a little extra physical activity without impacting your schedule, and that’s one benefit we could all use in our busy lives.
